STROKE IS A SIGNIFICANTLY UNMET MEDCIAL NEED
A stroke (also known as an acute cerebrovascular attack) is the rapid loss of brain function due to a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain.
About 87% of these occurrences are due to ischemia (lack of oxygen) caused by thrombosis (a clot). As a result, the affected area of the brain is often damaged, resulting in devastating outcomes for the majority of victims that suffer a stroke including paralysis, inability to understand or formulate speech, or inability to see one side of the visual field.
A stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications, and death.
Only 7% of stroke victims will receive an approved treatment which are:
- tPA (Alteplaseā¢) - Drug
- Merci Retriever® (Interventional catheter device)
- Penumbra System® (Interventional catheter device)
Sadly, for most patients, aspirin and rehabilitation are the primary course of treatment and most patients will have some form of impairment or long term disability.
- #3 cause of death in U.S.
- #2 cause of death in Europe
- #1 cause of long-term disability
- $68.9B annual burden to U.S. healthcare system
- Only 7% of victims receive an approved treatment
