STROKE IS A SIGNIFICANTLY UNMET MEDCIAL NEED

A stroke (also known as an acute cerebrovascular attack) is the rapid loss of brain function due to a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain.

About 87% of these occurrences are due to ischemia (lack of oxygen) caused by thrombosis (a clot). As a result, the affected area of the brain is often damaged, resulting in devastating outcomes for the majority of victims that suffer a stroke including paralysis, inability to understand or formulate speech, or inability to see one side of the visual field.

A stroke is a medical emergency and can cause permanent neurological damage, complications, and death.

Only 7% of stroke victims will receive an approved treatment which are:

  • tPA (Alteplaseā„¢) - Drug
  • Merci Retriever® (Interventional catheter device)
  • Penumbra System® (Interventional catheter device)

Sadly, for most patients, aspirin and rehabilitation are the primary course of treatment and most patients will have some form of impairment or long term disability.

795,000 occurrences annually in the U.S.
  • #3 cause of death in U.S.
  • #2 cause of death in Europe
  • #1 cause of long-term disability
  • $68.9B annual burden to U.S. healthcare system
  • Only 7% of victims receive an approved treatment
